Laudisio Celebrates Its 20th

Boulder's Laudisio is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month by rolling back the culinary calendar through two decades of favorite dishes. The "official" anniversary dinner will be on Monday, January 19, and a second anniversary event, a wine dinner, is scheduled for the following Tuesday, the 27th. The menus and the prices have not yet been revealed. Meanwhile, "Tasting Tuesdays" have been scheduled for January 6, 13 and 20 to enable guests to preview the follow week's specials -- but I don't know whether or not at a special price. I also don't know whether Tasting Tuesdays will continue in February. For any of these details, call 303-442-1300.

And Restaurant Kevin Taylor Marks Its 10th

Restaurant Kevin Taylor, the fine dining restaurant in Denver's Hotel Teatro, is offering a celebratory prix fixe menu for a generous five weeks, from January 5 to February 12. The seasonal menu inspired by Colorado winters, begins with an amuse bouche that is followed by guests' choice of three or four items for the next three courses. Priced at $99 for two people, this anniversary special is an excellent value, considering that entrees alone are in the $30-$40 range (plus one at $65). The anniversary prix fixe menu is:

First Course
Golden raisin and cauliflower tortellini with fried capers, caramelized cauliflower and ginger/ Parmesan froth
Roasted rabbit noodle soup with root vegetables, walnut gnocchi, apple sage relish
petite greens and fresh herbs with shaved Reggiano, endiveand 25 year balsamic
Roasted new potato and poached asparagus salad with micro-arugula, grilled lemon, Roquefort cheese, mustard vinaigrette

Main Course
Crispy roasted pavé of Atlantic salmon with imported French lentils, roasted tomatoes, haricots verts and peppered leeks
Imported speck, roasted Berkshire pork tenderloin with smoked mozzarella raviolis, grilled tomato, and pork sausage bolognese
Black pepper lacquered Muscovy duck breast with duck leg confit, fresh cavatelli, caramelized fennel and soy orange reduction
Roast Colorado bison tenderloin and braised back ribs with Golden Delicious risotto, asparagus and Tellicherry pepper sauce

Dessert
Tahitian vanilla bean crème brûlée with pistachio madeleines and vanilla bean sugar
German chocolate ice cream sandwich with toasted coconut biscuit, bittersweet chocolate ice cream, smoked almonds and caramel
Warm pecan/cranberry coffeecake with vanilla bean semifreddo, persimmon jam and macchiato anglaise

When you call 303-820-2600 for reservations, say that you are coming for the anniversary menu. Restaurant Kevin Taylor is in the Hotel Teatro, 1106 14th Street; Denver.

Lazy Dog Gets Up in Time for Breakfast

Breakfast on Pearl, billed as "a lazy dog joint," is a new cafe that is an adjunct to the popular Lazy Dog Saloon Sports Bar & Grill. The new downtown Boulder "joint" offers organic lattes, cappuccinos and espresso along with daily pastries (I wonder from which bakery) and free WiFi. It's at 1346 Pearl Street, Boulder; 303-440-3355.

Hot News About Cold Stuff

Paper has covered Gelato Bacio's windows for several weeks. Last summer, the lines often stretched to the sidewalk, but there are only so many frozen dessert places that downtown Boulder can sustain year-round. Gelato Bacio, owned by the Spruce Confections folks, began offering breakfast drinks, oatmeal, soups and sandwiches not long ago, and now, the storefront is undergoing a makeover to accommodate seasonal food favorites. Word is that the name will change and that while they will still be scooping their wonderful gelato, the name and the menu will be more reflective of seasonality. The renewed store, whatever its name will be, is at 1021 Pearl Street, Boulder, with the changeover expected by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, a local foodie who blogs as "Denveater" reports on Sweet Action, an ice cream emporium being constructed at 52 Broadway in Denver, with an anticipated opening early next month. The phone number is (or will be) 303-282-4645 in case you want to check on its progress.

Noodle News

Bones Noodle Bar, Frank Bonnano's new international noodle house, is about to open at 301 East Seventh Avenue close to his Mizuna and Luca d'Italia, respectively at 225 East Seventh Avenue and 711 Grant Street. One of New York's hot East Village restaurants is the bizarrely named Momofuku Noodle Bar, so of course, Denver must also have something with "noodle bar" in its name. Also just about ready to open its doors is Boulder's The Happy Noodle House at 835 Walnut Street in downtown Boulder.

You might consider Mark & Isabella, also slated to open soon, to be a noodle place too, because it promises to be an "Italian-American restaurant," and what's more Italian-American than pasta, which is (are?), after all, noodles. The location is at 425 South Teller in Belmar, near the intersection of West Alameda and South Wadsworth, near the owner's existing sister restaurant, The Oven Pizza 3 Vino.

Denver Restaurant Week Coming Up Next Month

Nearly 200 restaurants have signed up to participate in Denver Restaurant Week, February 21-27. The seven-day period is Denver's best dining deal with multi-course dinners for $52.80 for two or $26.40 per person, plus tax, gratuity and usually beverages. The website is up, so it's time to scout out your favorites and make reservations.

New Eatery Taking Root in Highland

Root Down, the newest in the Highland neighborhood, opened recently in an old 1950s service station made trend with overhead garage doors, mid-century decor and global cuisine like none that anyone could have foreseen 50 years ago. Right now, they serve dinner, with lunch to follow. The brains behind Root Down is Justin Cucci, once co-owner of Ye Waverly Inn in New York's West Village. He has recruited kitchen and front-of-the-house talent known from other Denver/Boulder restaurants. Root Down is taking shape at 1600 West 33rd Avenue (at Osage), Denver; 303-993-4200.

Root Down is not the Denver area's only new restaurant with gas-station connections. Littleton's Merle's of Littleton Restaurant opened in November in a building that was 1930s gas station and Merle’s Alignment before that. The family-friendly, American-style restaurant has kept the original overhead garage doors and old signs. It has a great Old Town location at 2609 West Main Street, Littleton; 303-797-6008.

Fuel Cafe isn't in an old gas station but definitely follows the vehicular theme. It is located in the second phase of the TAXI development in a Denver industrial area that developer Mickey Zepplin has dubbed RiNo (for River North). The Fuel Cafe, which has been garnering rave reviews, is at 3455 Ringsby Court, Denver; 303-296-4642.

Great news to have another breakfast choice on Pearl St. Mall (I still mourn the loss of Rocky Mountain Joes!). Will check Lazy Dog breakfast -- thanks!

Not "bizarrely named" at all. "Momofuku" is the name of the man who invented ramen:

Andrea - I don't believe that Lazy Dog's morning incarnation has breakfast entrees on the order of Rocky Mountain Joe's. I think it's more pastry and such.

Wayne - I did know that Momofuku is a Japanese name, but I didn't know anything about the history of ramen. Quite a remarkable story. Thanks for the link.

There is, of course, something incongruous about naming a high-toned restaurant after a man who found a way to make American sheat flour palatable to the post-WWII Japanese population. Ramen is now cheap, simple student fodder. I've seen house-brand cellophane packages for as little as 10 for $1 -- and often 3 for $1.

About the year's best dish at NY's Momofuku, the NYTimes wrote, "MOMOFUKU KO’S FROZEN FOIE GRAS David Chang turned a classic torchon into flakes piled high, like an incongruously fatty and liver-y Sno-Kone, over a brittle of nuts and a sweet wine gelée." Hardly simple, so if I had done more research, instead of "bizarrely named," I probably would have written "incongruously named."

Again, thnx for the enlightenment.

Hi Claire,

Thanks for adding our events to your blog! I just wanted to clarify Tasting Tuesday. It's a regular occurrence, in which we give complimentary samples of new dishes (or in this case classic) to get our guests' feedback. For January we will use it as a preview of the Classic Specials, and after that we will use it to try out new dishes, and see what you think of them!

Keep up the great work on your blog!

Andrea - I was under the impression that Lazy Dog's breakfast was mainly coffee and baked goods. In the "All the Buzz" column in today's DAILY CAMERA, Meg Tilton reports that they also serve "pancakes, egg dishes [and] a breakfast burrito," so I stand corrected. She also reminded me that in addition to coffee drinks, they make mimos and bloody Marys -- so surprise considering its sports bar lineage. So it might indeed be a Rocky Mountain Joes substitute -- without having to climb a flight of stairs. :-)

Thanks so much for posting the follow-up. The mention of pancakes perked Dana's ears right up, so we're definitely going to check it out!

And thanks to your blog and Jason Law's comment, we'll be going to Laudisio's on Tuesday!
